1 - 2 Months Before Move
- Create a binder/folder for moving records IE. estimates, receipts etc.
- Plan your moving method and get estimates
- Research storage facilities
- Schedule disconnection and connection utilities
- Plan how to move vehicles, pets, plants and valuables
- Plan how you will arrange furniture in new place - use a floor plan
- Hold a garage sale, donate, sell or remove unnecessary items IE. declutter
- Schedule a transfer of records (mail, govt. schools etc.)
- Buy/ acquire packing materials
- Start using food stored in your pantry
- Finalize moving method and make arrangements
- Begin packing non-essential items
- Label boxes by room and contents
- Separate valuable items to transport yourself and label DO NOT MOVE
- keep a box out for storing pieces, parts & essential tools you will want on move day!
- Create an inventory list of items and box contents
- Fill our a Change of Address form at the post office
- Advise important contacts of address change such as employers and family, insurance & credit
- Take vehicle for a tune up prior to any long moves
1 - 2 Weeks Before Move
- Continue packing and clean as you go
- Pack items separately that you will need right away at your new place
- Plan to take the day off for moving day
- Find useful things for children to do- try to involve them if possible
- Find someone to babysit small children on move day
- Pack suitcases with personal items etc.
- Reconfirm moving method with those involved
- Fill prescriptions if needed
- Schedule cancellation of services such as magazine, lawn care etc.
- Take furniture apart if necessary
- Dispose of all flammables such as paint, propane & gas
- Use up perishable food
- Confirm all moving details and ensure you have all paperwork
- Make a action plan for the day of move
- Plan when/how to pick up rented truck
- Prepare for moving expenses (hotel, food etc.)
- Continue cleaning the house as you are packing
- Make sure essential tools are handy
- Pack a bag for water bottles, pen/paper, snacks, documents & essentials
- Set aside boxes/items that you are moving yourself
- Remove bedding and take apart beds
- Pick up truck if rented
- Take movers/helpers through the house to inform them of what to do
- Walk through the empty house to check for anything left behind
- Take inventory before movers leave
- Make sure your movers have correct address
- Lock windows, doors, turn off lights
- Check to see if utilities are working
- Perform initial inspection, not all damages, take photos if necessary
- Clean and vacuum as required
- Direct movers
- Offer drinks and snacks to volunteers
- Assemble beds with bedding
- Begin unpacking, start with kitchen, bathroom and essentials first
- Check for damages of items while unpacking and be aware of deadline for any "claims"
- Replace locks if necessary & make copies
- Confirm that the mail is arriving at your new address
- Make sure your previous utilities have been paid and cancelled
- Complete your change of address checklist ( Bank, Credit Cards, Insurance, Magazines etc.)
- Schedule a time to get local driving licence etc. if moving out of province or country
- Get local phone books
- Find new Dr. and Dentist
- Update your homeowners or renters insurance
